There are so many dinosaur preschool books available now, it’s hard to know which ones are good fits for your preschoolers. Because dinosaurs are my FAVORITE preschool theme, I’ve read a LOT of dinosaur books with my students. I think it depends on what you’re looking for in choosing some good dinosaur preschool books.

Just the Dinosaur Facts

While there are a lot of books about dinosaurs for preschool age kiddos, there aren’t a lot of dinosaur books with facts about dinosaurs or history of dinosaurs. Many books with dinosaurs for preschool and kindergarten age are about a dinosaur character and, while super cute, may not be what you’re looking for. I found ABCs of Dinosaur: A Powerfully Prehistoric Alphabet * on Amazon and it has factual information while also teaching children the alphabet. It’s a board book and appropriate for little ones ages 1 to 5. It lacks a “story” per se, but has some facts that preschoolers and kindergarteners will most definitely remember.

Cute Dinosaur Books for Preschoolers

One of my favorite preschool dinosaur books is Dinos Don’t Do Yoga by Catherine Bailey. It has beautiful illustrations by Alex Willmore and an adorable story introducing some basic yoga poses along with the concept of being a “new kid”, being kind to others and always try your best. Dinos Don’t Do Yoga does mention names of several dinosaurs, which is always fun for preschool and kindergarten. One thing I wish this book did better was show the actual poses and/or describe how to do the poses mentioned. You can’t really see how to do the poses if you don’t already know how to do them, so it makes it more difficult if you’re wanting to have a movement activity incorporated into your lesson plan.

Another dinosaur book that encourages movement is Dinosaur Yoga by Miriam Gates. Dinosaur Yoga also has gorgeous illustrations by Matthew Rivera. I love watercolor illustrations and these are some of my favorite. I really like the descriptions of how to do the poses, which is nice for little beginners.

Suggestions for Dinosaur Yoga Lesson Plan

1. Do the yoga poses with your students. Children love doing yoga with their teachers. It’s a unique experience you can share with your students, which is wonderful for creating a bond. They LOVE seeing you try something you may not be 100% comfortable with — especially if you look silly doing it. Lean into it. Tell them you “can learn together”.

2. If you are using a dinosaur book that doesn’t already come with yoga poses, you can make up yoga poses with your students (we use Yoglaore’s Dinosaur Bundle which includes dino yoga poses and activities, but we still like to make up yoga poses for other dinosaurs). The children really enjoy this activity and it allows them to move around and get their wiggles out as needed.
