Do It Yourself Kinetic Sand Recipe

Do it yourself kinetic sand is so easy to make with this recipe I came across on Pinterest. I have tried other recipes before and they were okay, but not great. One of the recipes I tried previously used actual sand, which isn’t always practical or cost effective. The “real” kinetic sand can be pricy as well, so I really wanted to find a do-it-yourself kinetic sand recipe that I could make easily, was cost effective and didn’t use real sand.

Enter happytoddlerplaytime.com. This recipe not only met all my criteria, but also was “taste safe”, which I love. While I wouldn’t encourage eating it, it certainly is safe if that actually happened. And in a room full of preschoolers, you never know! Be sure to visit happytoddlerplaytime.com. It’s a great website with all kinds of fun stuff for parents and teachers.

Kinetic sand is such a great fine motor/sensory activity. It has a unique texture, is moldable and holds it shape. Read here for more benefits of sensory play.

I also found some toys that I love to use for play with my kinetic sand. Amazon has lots of different silicone products for kids. I love I can put them in a laundry bag in the dishwasher to clean, allow them to dry and they’re ready to use again.

This is just one of many playsets from Amazon that work well with kinetic sand.

I used my toys and sand for the first time at one of my Sensory Yoga Storytime classes at our local library. The children loved it and the reason I am writing this post is because I had several mamas ask me for the recipe.

One thing I think I might try next time is to add more food coloring to my water. I would like to see if I can get more vivid colors next time, without having it come off on little hands. These colors were perfect for “unicorn” sand, “mermaid” sand, any of the pastel themes. Next time I’d like to make some rainbow sand!
