Looking for fine motor activities for preschoolers? Here are some great options that can help develop your child’s fine motor skills and prepare them for success in school.
Some of the best fine motor activities for 3-year-olds include finger painting, bead stringing, and fine-motor focused games like “Pick Up Sticks”. These activities encourage children to use their fine motor skills by providing hands-on opportunities to build dexterity, control, coordination, and concentration.
Whether you’re looking for fun group activities or simple at-home exercises, there are plenty of ways to boost your child’s fine motor skills. For example, try introducing them to puzzles or encouraging them to do arts and crafts projects like drawing or coloring.
Sorting
Sorting is one of my favorite fine motor activities to so with my students. While it doesn’t seem to exciting to us, little ones LOVE it! Sorting objects by color, size, category etc. is a big hit. Children can use their fingers to develop those fine motor skills, but can also use tongs and other tools.*
Using Dot Printables
I can’t say enough about printables with dots — you can use them for so many great fine motor activities! Use dot markers to fill in objects, small glass beads or bingo chips on a light table (see above), paper dots covering dots or even use dot stickers for extra fine motor fun.
Suction Toys
Holy cow, these are my new favorite thing! There are so many different kinds of suction toys now — different themes, sizes, shapes and colors. They can be used in the tub, on light tables or smooth surfaces like doors or windows. Children can use them to build/design things (great STEM activity)!
Whatever you choose, be sure to keep your child engaged and excited about learning, and remember that these skills are crucial for school readiness and academic success.
