The recipe for slime with Borax is easy to make and so much fun for kids of all ages to play with. The great thing about making slime is that it’s super easy, doesn’t use many ingredients and can provide hours of fun. It’s a wonderful sensory activity, both making it and playing with it, so use the opportunity to make the activity a learning experience as well.
If you have a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, he or she may not like the feel or texture of slime (or gak) right off the bat. Don’t get discouraged, it may take many times of getting it out and playing with it (try it with a friend) before your child seems up for the activity. Don’t force the issue, try again another time.
Here is the recipe for slime with Borax:
4 oz school glue
1/2 tsp Borax (found in the laundry detergent aisle)
food coloring or washable liquid watercolors
glass bowl
measuring cup
Pour school glue into glass bowl and fill the empty glue bottle with warm water and add to the glue. Add food coloring. Mix well. In the measuring cup add 1/2 tsp Borax to 1/4 cup of hot water and stir until well dissolved. And finally, add Borax mixture to the glue mixture.
Knead the mixture until it starts to mix together, which takes a little while. Store in a plastic bag or airtight container. You can also add scent to your slime for even more sensory fun.
There are so many things to use when playing with slime — we often use large glass shells (always supervised of course), plastic bugs or cars, or sea creatures just to name a few. One other tip is to use a tray that has edges because gak does have a tendency to “expand” or “grow” outward if left alone.
