Playdough Dinosaurs — Fun Family Activity for a Rainy Day

Continuing with my interest in all projects dinosaur, I thought this would be fun to try with the kids and they loved it! It doesn’t require a lot of stuff, you may have most of it (if not all) around the house.

Making playdough dinosaurs is just a different take on playing with playdough and basically an arts and crafts project. Several months ago we made playdough bugs and spiders and that was a HUGE hit — we even made a web with masking tape on the floor that the kids thought was super cool. Once you have finished your dinosaurs you can also have a great time creating a habitat for your dinosaurs too.

Here are the “bumpy” pipe stems (we always called them pipe cleaners) that we used.

You’ll Need:

playdough (you can make your own which is a great sensory activity)
chenille pipe stems/cleaners (I used the “bumpy” stems, but you can use whatever is on hand)
pasta (something like rotini, penne, farfalle, etc)
paint (if you want to paint your pasta. I used spray paint because it was quick and easy, but I realize this may not work for everyone. I had a lot of kids to plan for)
dinosaur cookie cutters (optional)
googly eyes or something to use for eyes

What we did

Once you have collected your items you’d like to use, start by cutting up your pipe stems into about 2″ pieces. I used the bumpy stems and cut them where the bump ended and that worked well. You can use these to make plates for your dinosaurs, or maybe the kids might want to make crazy dinosaurs that they make up themselves. You could also use them for spikes. I used the pasta for the spikes on my purple dinosaur.

Take your playdough and either use the cookie cutters to cut out your dinosaurs, but I tried to encourage the kids to make a 3-D dinosaur that can stand on its own that they could actually play with in their dinosaur habitat. We used the accessories to “decorate” the dinosaurs, their features that make them unique.

We used the little plastic pellets from our sensory bin as our eyes because there happened to be a few already on the table.

We bent the pipe stems and twisted them into the shapes we wanted. You could also use beads or anything else you wanted to for the extras on your dinosaurs. You know kids — the more outrageous, the better!!!!!

This one I thought was really cute! I like how the bumpy stems “poofed out” for the plates on the dinosaur.
