Why Movement Matters in Early Childhood Learning
Boosts Brainpower
Research highlights that physical activity directly benefits brain function. A 2016 study in the Journal of Pediatrics revealed that children engaging in moderate to vigorous activity showed significant improvement in cognitive skills like attention, memory, and academic achievement. Increased blood flow during physical activity delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the brain, fostering its growth and performance.
Develops Coordination and Balance
Every hop, jump, or skip helps preschoolers fine-tune coordination and balance. These gross motor skills are critical for school readiness as they build the foundational physical abilities required to sit up, write, and focus in class.
Improves Retention Through Active Learning
When learning includes movement, multiple senses are engaged. For example, acting out a story with gestures or dancing to words from a song helps children form stronger neural connections. These hands-on, engaging activities make it easier for kids to understand, process, and retain information.
Enhances Key Life Skills
Activities like “Simon Says” or an obstacle course hone spatial awareness, body control, and the ability to follow instructions—all essential skills for future classroom success. They also teach patience and listening, while boosting self-regulation and decision-making.
Sets the Stage for Lifelong Success
Physical activity during preschool years does more than teach immediate lessons. According to the Journal of Obesity, movement-based learning boosts academic engagement and readiness. Over time, it links to better school performance, fewer behavioral problems, and more confidence in and out of the classroom.

Your little friends may struggle with behaviors — keeping hands to selves, impulse control, keeping quiet while you’re trying to talk, and/or staying on topic. Some days you might feel like those little cuties are the ones who are really in control of your classroom. Sometimes it just takes one child to disrupt every good vibe you have going in your classroom.
You may also be sending home a newsletter, but you wonder, “Is it being read?” You think, “I spent an hour designing this letter home about what we’ve been doing and I don’t even know if anyone is reading it. Do parents have any idea what we’re doing at school?”
You may be a parent who just wants/needs more ideas for activities to do at home. Family activities would be ideal — something the entire family can do together, especially while winding down for bedtime. You may struggle with establishing a routine with your child.
Imagine if you could have more free time instead of planning lessons.
Imagine if you could teach your preschoolers and kindergarteners AND keep them engaged the entire time you needed their attention?
What if you could have your students moving while teaching them? What if you could teach children how to self-regulate? Better focus? Retain information?
What if your students could benefit from all the positives yoga and movement has to offer children?
What if your classroom could easily change themed decor each time you changed themes with your lesson plans? Cute fact posters up around the room, printed cards for centers, yoga pose cards for flip books, and more!
What If you could continue the theme once the children leave your classroom and head home? What if you could help parents feel more connected to what their child does in class with you?
What if they had the information that could engage in pointed questions about what they did, and not only that, but could ACTIVELY participate by doing a couple of yoga poses and activities with their child?
Hi. I’m Jen Anderson, creator of Yogalore, a movement and sensory-based curriculum for preschool and kindergarten children.
I’ve been working with children for over 30 years. While I currently teach yoga and art to over 100 preschoolers per week, I have been a preschool teacher, taught special needs children and adults, held camps and workshops for children using my Yogalore curriculum.
When I was first an assistant preschool teacher, I had the opportunity to work with many talented pediatric occupational, speech and physical therapists as well as behavioral interventionists. This was an incredible life-changing experience for me. I learned the importance of purposeful activities for children learning about the world.
Many of the children I worked with had sensory processing issues. Often they couldn’t get enough swinging, spinning, jumping, hopping, rocking…you get the idea. It was hard to get children to calm and focus when it was time for activities like circle time. Not to mention — ALL CHILDREN need to move, right?!?!?!
What if we could channel that movement into a more structured activity, WHILE teaching them? That was the basis of Yogalore. It began with yoga pose cards and a sensory activity and grew into full lesson plans, an at-home product line…and more!
As a teacher, creator and artist, I want to put good things out into the world. I created my products originally for myself in my own classes — I know my products work and the children love my classes and workshops. Now I want to share them with you!
Using yoga in the classroom or at home isn’t just about movement. Why is it beneficial to children? Why would it be helpful in an educational setting?
Enhances Flexibility, Balance, and Coordination
Yoga helps young bodies develop physical skills like balance, coordination, and flexibility, which are essential for their growth and overall mobility.
Promotes Physical Fitness and Healthy Habits
Introducing yoga early encourages children to stay active and lays the foundation for healthy lifestyle habits that can last a lifetime.
Improves Concentration and Focus
Through simple poses and breathing exercises, yoga supports early learning by improving attention spans and cognitive development in preschoolers.
Encourages Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation
Yoga teaches kids to tune into their bodies and emotions, helping them manage stress, build confidence, and develop emotional resilience.
Fosters Social Interaction and Team Building
Practicing yoga in a group setting introduces preschoolers to cooperative play, helping them bond, share, and build friendships in a non-competitive environment.
Supports Better Sleep Patterns and Relaxation
Regular yoga can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and foster healthy sleep routines Yoga is more than just an activity—it’s a powerful tool to support young children’s physical, emotional, and social development.
I don’t know how to do yoga.
The beauty of it is most of your students don’t know how to do it either. Anyone can use Yogalore! These yoga pose cards are “print and go” or can be used digitally on a screen. The cards are labeled, the pose photos are concise.
I notice some of the poses change names throughout the themes or a different pose is used for the same name elsewhere. What’s up with that?
In Yogalore we use the word “pose” loosely. We use different poses for different things. One day downward dog might be a pose we do because there’s a dog in our story. Another day downward dog might be a “wolf”, or “howl at the moon”, etc. The pose or movement helps teach and keeps kiddos on the move in an organized way. You don’t have to worry about how long to ‘hold a pose” either. These lesson plans are to keep children moving while you’re teaching.
I’m not flexible. I can’t do yoga. How can I do this with my students?
I hear this one a lot. You don’t have to be flexible to practice yoga or to do yoga with your students. You practice yoga TO BECOME more flexible. Yoga accepts you wherever you are. I will say to you the same thing I say to my students, “Just do your best. That’s all you can do.” As with everything, we improve with practice over time. Challenge yourself. Yoga can be a great group activity. See how you and your students improve over time.
Yogalore was designed for the average parent or teacher. I didn’t design Yogalore to only be used by yogis who have been practicing for 20 years. Think of it as you learning WITH your students. You get to enjoy the benefits of yoga right along with your students.
Do my students have to take off their shoes?
My students that I teach at preschool don’t take off their shoes usually (shoes that are obviously way too big or clunky boots do come off). I only see my students for 30 minute blocks of time, so if we removed shoes, that’s all I would be doing. We try to keep things easy and it was designed that way on purpose. I see you, busy teacher! You too, stressed out parent!!!! If it’s not a hassle for you and you have time, of course kiddos can take their shoes off!
We don’t have yoga mats. How can we possibly do yoga?
You don’t have to use yoga mats. In fact, I don’t use them when I teach. I have taken yoga mats and cut out large circles (we call them “dots”) to be used during my classes. This gives children a “space” — a place to stay while we practice yoga. I’ve also just taught on a small carpet without mats or dots. I’ve even just had the gym floor for hundreds of students!!!! You can even put taped shapes on the floor to keep distance between children.
We don’t have a huge classroom. How can I do yoga in my classroom?
You really don’t need a giant room to do yoga. Have a little space between bodies and you’re good to go. Encourage students to be mindful of where their friends are in relation to them. This is also a great social activity for children still learning social skills and how to effectively communicate their needs.
I already have my own lesson plans. How can I use Yogalore?
If you have your own lesson plans you want to use for a theme, that’s great! Let Yogalore supplement your existing lesson plan. Yogalore still includes a suggested playlist, yoga poses, and even has a guided visualization at the end of the lesson during Rest & Relax. These components can add so much to the students’ experiences.
Does this resource REALLY contain everything I need?
You bet your sweet bippy it does! Yogalore’s Yoga & Movement Cards also contain a full Yogalore lesson plan, using the Yogalore Framework. Suggested music, story, activity, movement and relaxation/calming activity. You can print the cards out, use them on a monitor or smart board.
But don’t forget — this product also contains fact posters and cards that go with your ten themes! Print the posters and use on bulletin boards or to spruce up an empty wall. Use the cards digitally or print out — whatever you need! And lastly, the ten themes in your bundle also include our newest product line, Bringing Yoga Home — our take home curriculum. It’s hard to inform parents the things you do at school. Let us do the heavy lifting!
We have a sticker template for you to print out stickers for each child to have one at the end of the day, a send home sheet with some of the yoga poses you did in class, and finally a printable with some suggested family activities that go with the theme of your lesson plan. These products were carefully curated to encourage engagement between parent and child.
