I spray paint any and everything. Seriously. So many colors to choose from and results are immediate and drastic. In art therapy a few weeks ago we created some of the most fun, beautiful, simple spray paint artwork along with a little help from Mother Nature. My students loved this project! I think this had to be in my Top 10 Favorite Art Projects. I know I will probably get flack for using spray paint for a kids’ project, but I think it goes without saying that this activity must be supervised properly because of the spray paint as well as the trimmers. My students were adults with special needs and they also needed assistance.

First thing we did was set up a utility cart with our supplies:

— Watercolor paper *(or any other canvas or thick paper)

— Spray paint, several colors you want to use together, I recommend using silver, gold or bronze as one of your colors

— Small trimmers (to cut small branches and/or sprigs

The day of our activity was beautiful and perfect for a nature walk. We walked around and looked at different kinds of shrubs, plants and small trees and cut about ten different kinds of branches/twigs/ sprigs with varying shapes. Once we had our branches and sprigs I let each student pick several different branches.

They placed one on their paper and then they picked the spray paint colors they wanted. They chose one color and sprayed it lightly on the paper. We lifted the branch off the paper and then placed another branch on the paper and repeated. Each student chose three or four branches and colors. We had these as our finished products:

Most young children and even some adults may not have the fine motor strength to spray the paint themselves, so they might need some assistance. You can create some gorgeous spray paint artwork this way!!!!
