Yoga for kids is becoming more popular — poses and all. It’s marvelous. It makes me happy. I don’t say that just because I teach yoga to children. I say that because I am thinking on a much larger scale. I realize my philosophy regarding yoga for children is a little different. It doesn’t matter to me if a child does a yoga pose “correctly”. That being said, obviously safety is first, and if a child is doing a pose in such a way that they can hurt themselves or someone else, obviously that’s an issue that I would handle.
Love of Yoga for Life
Honestly, my goal for my students is really simple: I want children to have fun. I want to do my best to leave a lasting positive impression about our time together. I want to instill a lifelong love of yoga, which to me is the most important aspect of teaching yoga to kids — not just yoga poses. The body awareness will come, the strength and muscle tone will grow over time. Balance and coordination will improve with practice too. But if a child doesn’t love yoga, they may be less likely to continue or pick it back up as they get older.
Other Benefits of Yoga for Kids
Of course all the other benefits of yoga are important. Teaching a child mindfulness, the ability to self-calm and self-regulate their emotions is HUGE. Giving them tools that can improve the quality of life is a big deal — and I don’t take that lightly. Yoga for kids — poses and all — can set them on a lifelong course that can benefit them in ways they can’t even imagine.
