Outdoor play almost seems like something from the past. I’m probably dating myself, but when we were kids we played outside most of the time, especially in warm weather. We knew what time dinner was and we made sure we were home by then. When I was little I remember my mom loading up our red wagon and taking my brother, my best friend, and me to Ashland (home of Henry Clay) for a picnic lunch and a long afternoon of playing on the grounds. I cherish those memories.
Playing outside seems to be making a comeback, thanks to the popularity of natural playgrounds and social media sites such as Pinterest sharing ideas and activities for outdoor spaces and outdoor play spaces. We all know that playing outdoors is good for us — of course there’s fresh air and a little sunshine, but what else? Why is outdoor play important for children?
According to Sanford Health there are several benefits to children playing outside, some which might surprise you.
Children who have more outdoor play are physically healthier. They’re exerting themselves with activities like running, jumping, climbing. They’re improving their gross motor skills and endurance. Children are also burning more calories and building muscle tone with increased activity.
Building social/emotional skills can also be enhanced with outdoor play. Kids are interacting with each other playing games like hide-and-seek, exploring and learning how to play with other children. Children need to learn and outdoor play can enhance those opportunities and experiences.
Children who struggle with ADD/ADHD can especially benefit from outdoor play because it helps to increase a child’s attention span and ability to focus. Children outdoors are more likely to initiate and engage in new activities.
Last but not least (I saved it for last because it’s my favorite!) is improving sensory skills and experiences. Think about being outside, feeling the gentle breeze across your face and feeling the warm sunshine on your skin. Makes me smile just thinking about it. You can hear the wind blow through the trees, the bees buzzing by and see the colorful butterflies and flowers.
One thing I really encourage in any outdoor play space is a space for gardening or herbs — anything with a pleasant scent. Plants/herbs like lavender, basil and cilantro are great plants that are easy to grow and have many uses. Gardening with children in itself has its own benefits.
Hopefully, if the weather is nice where you are, you’ll go outside and play. That’s where I’m headed!!!!
