Brain Breaks for Kindergarteners

Brain breaks for kindergarteners should be a regular part of their day. Brain breaks are short periods of time that children can take to move, stretch and refocus their brain. These activities can help improve overall brain function and attention span, as well as reducing stress.

For kindergarteners, brain breaks should be taken regularly throughout the day – preferably a few times an hour. This allows them to recharge and destress so that they can remain focused on their tasks. Brain breaks for kindergartners should involve playful activities that engage both the mind and body such as running laps around the classroom, jumping jacks or playing a game like Simon Says. Other ideas include dancing to upbeat music, deep-breathing exercises or even coloring in quiet areas of the room.

Try some of Yogalore’s most popular yoga pose cards for your kindergarteners. They are perfect for brain breaks and get those wiggles out!

Yoga is also an excellent activity for brain breaks for preschool and kindergarteners. In addition to improving brain function through movement, yoga also offers lots of additional benefits. Yogalore has many different themed sets of yoga cards that can be changed out regularly or can go along with the theme your are teaching.

One idea is to have a “brain break corner” in the classroom (or in their bedroom if you are a parent of a kindergartener) that might have laminated cards on a ring for a flipbook of activities they can do for a few minutes. Some teachers have even made a center for brain breaks and it’s a part of their center time each day.

To ensure brain breaks remain fun and engaging, try to mix them up from time to time. Doing the same brain break multiple times in a row can become monotonous and lose its effectiveness. Additionally, brain breaks should be done in an environment that is both safe and comfortable so that the children can enjoy them without feeling overwhelmed or scared that they may get in trouble if they want to take one.
