While elephant populations in some areas are growing and expanding, the number of elephants in other areas continues to decline, especially in areas of central and East Africa. The species is considered to be “vulnerable”.
The Asian elephant population has dropped by 50% in just over three generations and numbers continue to drop. Asian elephants are considered to be “endangered”.
