Dinosaur Activity for Kindergarten: Frozen Dinosaur Eggs

A dinosaur activity for kindergarten is a fun way to teach children about dinosaurs — something they are almost always interested in already! In this post we’ll be doing a sensory activity which is perfect if you’re doing a dinosaur theme at home or at school. They’re especially great during warmer weather when you can go outside and experiment a little. There are also ways you can make frozen dinosaur eggs more scientific if you like.

To do this project, you’ll need the following:

**small dinosaurs — these are so cool — they glow in the dark!
latex balloons (I tried small water balloons and they didn’t work — too small and didn’t work with my faucet)
large droppers (or empty ketchup or dish soap containers, something to transfer water to the dinosaur eggs)
one or two small bowls of water
table salt

To begin, the hardest part about this activity is getting the dinosaur in the balloon. I stretched the opening and that seemed to help. If you have an assistant, one can stretch and hold the balloon open while the other person put the dinosaur in the balloon.

The next step is to fill the balloon with water. I placed the balloon on the end of the faucet and turned it on to get it as full as I needed and then tied it. I made sure the balloon was still an oval “egg” shape. Then I put them in the freezer overnight to make sure they were frozen solid.

Once removed from the freezer, use a pair of scissors to snip the tied end off and then the balloon should come off easily.

If you’re doing the project indoors, place the eggs in the sink or a large container the children can access easily. Fill one bowl with plain water, one with water and add salt. You could also try water that is different temperatures too. Use large droppers, empty dish soap or ketchup bottles to transfer water from the container to the eggs. Make sure to use the same water each time on the same dinosaur. It’s fun to see which egg melts first (warm salt water melts the fastest). For younger children, they just want to melt the ice so they can retrieve the dinosaurs.

Older children can learn about the science behind why the salt melts the ice faster than just water. Salt melts ice and helps prevent re-freezing by lowering the freezing point of water — freezing point depression.

You can also add food coloring to the balloons after you fill them with water. This just gives another fun element to the project.
