Activities for Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? are plentiful, but how about something a little different? Maybe a movement activity that has numerous benefits for children? The book in itself is wonderful, but adding the element of yoga to the story? It can be a gamechanger!
One of the things I like about using Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? in my lesson plans is that it’s a short story that has a lot of educational elements. I like our yoga pose cards that follow along with the story because it adds even more to the lesson plan. Each animal pose card includes an interesting fact, plus the yoga pose itself. Activities for Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? don’t have to be complicated or require a lot of extra supplies. A carpet or rug works just fine as long as there is some space between children to get the wiggles out.
Another thing I like about these pose cards is that you can use them repeatedly. If you do a weekly theme for this book or an Eric Carle theme for an entire week, I encourage you to use the cards daily, for the duration of the theme. Repeating the yoga poses is beneficial physically and mentally, but also can help them remember aspects of the story, the colors, the facts, and the yoga poses themselves.
If you aren’t crazy about using the yoga cards for a theme you are doing in class, using them for a brain break works so well. I’ve used them at the end of the day when we have a few extra minutes, but not enough time to begin an entirely new subject, project or activity. We use it sometimes right before it’s time to get packed up for dismissal. It’s not only great for the children, but I LOVE an activity that doesn’t require getting more “stuff” out and then having to put it back again at the end of the day. We have our pose cards on the TV, thanks to an HDMI cable, and the kids love it! Everyone can see and they love the bright colors and fun clipart.
