Fruit Stamping — Sensory Art Activity

Fruit stamping is such a great activity. I really miss our art classes — so I wanted today’s activity to be something where we can use be creative. It’s pretty straightforward, and I am hoping if you do end up doing this activity, you’ll send me photos — I would love to post the children making art!

Not only is this an easy activity, but it’s a wonderful sensory activity. I happened to use a lemon and a lime because that’s what I had –but you don’t have to. Use what you have, or better yet, use something you need to get rid of. I also cut up the slices I had once I finished and put a couple down the disposal. It smells so good!

For this activity, you’ll need:
paper (I used cardstock)
paint (I used acrylic because that’s all I have at home, but I think watercolors might work too, in which case you won’t need a plate or palette)
lemon, lime, or orange
paintbrush
plate or palette for paint
knife
cutting board

Begin by choosing your paint colors and putting about a silver dollar size amount on a plate or palette.

Cut the end off your lemon, lime or orange. Using your paintbrush, paint the end (where you just cut it) with paint. If you want you can try to dip the end directly into the paint. That didn’t work well for me. I could see more of the definition and lines when I painted it onto the lemon. Then press the stamp down firmly onto the paper.

Make sure to press to get the whole image on the paper.

You can do a couple of things after your first stamp. You can dip or paint a new color onto the color you just used, or I made another thin slice and cut off the end so there’s no more paint and I could use a new color without mixing colors. The other thing that I liked about slicing off the painted end is that it also changes the size of your stamp — it becomes a little bigger or smaller. You can’t cut it too many times or you won’t have enough left to hold onto when you’re fruit stamping.

Slicing off the end makes for less waste and changes the size of your stamp.

Talk about the lemons/limes. How do they smell? How do they feel?

You can turn the slices on their sides and dip in paint and roll them on the paper, to add another element to the artwork.
