Some days call for an outdoor adventure. Other days, the weather has other plans. These free scavenger hunt printables give children something to explore either way—with one nature scavenger hunt and one indoor scavenger hunt.
Use them at home, in your preschool classroom, or with a small group. All you need is the printable, something to mark your discoveries, and a little curiosity!
What’s Included?
This free set includes two scavenger hunt printables:
-
Nature scavenger hunt: Take your search outdoors and explore the world around you.
-
Indoor scavenger hunt: Turn familiar surroundings into a new adventure without heading outside.
Choose whichever hunt fits your day, or save both so you have an activity ready when you need it.

Nature Scavenger Hunt: Take the Learning Outside
A walk becomes a different experience when children have something to look for. Suddenly, they’re slowing down, looking closely, and noticing things they might otherwise walk right past.
Bring the nature scavenger hunt on a walk, explore your backyard, or use it in an outdoor area at school. Look over the page together before you begin, and decide where your group will search.
Children can point out their discoveries and mark them on the printable. There’s no need to collect everything—looking, talking, and noticing are part of the adventure.
Try a few questions along the way:
-
“Where do you think we should look?”
-
“What do you notice about it?”
-
“How is this different from the last one we found?”
If you don’t find everything, that’s okay! Talk about what you found and what you might look for another day.

Indoor Scavenger Hunt: An Adventure for Stay-Inside Days
Rainy afternoon? Need a change of pace? The indoor scavenger hunt gives children a reason to get up, move around, and look at a familiar space with fresh eyes.
Use it at home or in your classroom. Before starting, show children where they can search and explain that they can point to an item rather than carry it around.
For younger children, look for one item at a time together. Older children can work with a partner or explore more independently within your chosen area.
Keep it playful. The goal is to discover things, share ideas, and enjoy the search.
More Than a Search-and-Find Activity
Scavenger hunts give children opportunities to practice several skills through play:
-
Observation: Looking closely and noticing details.
-
Language: Naming discoveries and describing what they see.
-
Problem-solving: Deciding where to search next.
-
Cooperation: Sharing ideas and helping a partner.
-
Movement: Walking, reaching, bending, and exploring their surroundings.
You can extend the activity with a simple conversation afterward: “What was easiest to find? What surprised you? What would you add to our next scavenger hunt?”
Simple Ways to Use Your Scavenger Hunt Printables
Make it a team adventure. Search together and let children take turns pointing out discoveries.
Keep it short. Choose a few items instead of completing the whole page, especially with younger children.
Let children lead. Ask where they think you should look before offering suggestions.
Follow their curiosity. If something sparks a question or conversation, pause and explore it together. The printable is a starting point—you don’t have to rush to finish it.
